Whenever I find myself in Orange or Laguna Beach, one spot almost always makes the “maybe we’ll eat here” list: Urth Caffé. Especially when I’m dining with a group that has different dietary preferences, it’s a safe—and honestly enjoyable—choice.

To me, Urth Caffé feels like a coffee shop on steroids. Think old-world European café charm, but bigger, livelier, and filled with options. The atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit—warm, inviting, and just busy enough to feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special.

What Makes Urth Caffé Unique

Since 1989, Urth Caffé has built its reputation on roasting its own heirloom, organic coffee and sourcing fine teas. While I’m not a coffee drinker, I can still appreciate their commitment to quality and sustainability. Their focus on organic, responsibly sourced ingredients and direct relationships with family farms is something that truly sets them apart.

Even more appealing? Their ability to create a menu that works for almost everyone. Whether you’re a meat-eater, vegetarian, vegan, or leaning gluten-free like me, you’ll find something to enjoy.

A Menu That Truly Has Something for Everyone

One thing to know before you go: the menu is extensive. You might want to preview it ahead of time because once you’re in line, you’ll likely be distracted—if not completely mesmerized—by the large glass bakery case filled with freshly baked goods.

The flavors at Urth aren’t overly bold or complex, but they are consistently pleasant, well-balanced, and thoughtfully prepared. It’s comfort food with a clean, elevated feel.

If you’re someone who enjoys a hearty salad as a full meal, the Paradise Salad is a favorite—especially among my raw-leaning vegan friends. This salad is made with assorted seasonal vegetables and fruits, cannellini beans, walnuts and wild rice all tossed in their pomegranate dressing, and topped with vegan almond cheese. It’s served with Urth pita bread upon request. Although it contains quite a few cooked ingredients, I can. see why it would be worth the splurge!

Personally, I almost always order the grilled vegetable pesto panini—loaded with eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, and roasted peppers. It’s simple, satisfying, and consistently good.

I’ve also enjoyed the Pizza Primavera, topped with a variety of vegetables and a surprisingly delicious almond-based ricotta that adds a creamy finish.

Another standout is the Vegan Patty Melt Panini—a plant-based patty layered with caramelized onions and dairy-free pepper jack cheese, grilled to perfection. Even the side salad deserves a mention—lightly dressed and full of flavor. I suspect it may have been discontinued, since I no longer see it on their menu, but I must admit that it was pretty good!

Don’t Skip Dessert

Urth offers several vegan dessert options, including jumbo cookies and a rich chocolate cake. But my go-to? The pumpkin pie—minus the whipped cream. It’s creamy, comforting, and honestly one of the better versions I’ve had.

Plant-Based Options Worth Exploring

Urth Caffé continues to expand its vegan-friendly offerings, including:

  • Avocado pizza with hummus, sliced avocado and almond cheese
  • Huevos Rancheros made with plant-based eggs and almond cheese
  • Hueveos Rancheros burrito made with plant-based eggs
  • Fresh juices and smoothies
  • A variety of plant milks (soy, almond, oat)

Many menu items can also be customized, which makes it even easier to stick to your dietary preferences.

Still on My List

I haven’t made it there for breakfast yet, but I’m genuinely curious to try their plant-based huevos rancheros. Sometimes it’s not just about the meal—it’s about the experience of seeing how different places interpret plant-based comfort food.

Final Thoughts

Urth Caffé may not be the place you go for bold, groundbreaking flavors—but it is the place you go when you want a beautiful atmosphere, tasty, good-quality food, and options that work for everyone at the table.

And honestly? That kind of consistency is underrated.
