The Truth About Going Plant-Based

Let’s be honest—transitioning to a plant-based diet isn’t always easy. Food is more than just fuel. It’s culture. It’s comfort. It’s memory.

For many of us, the idea of giving up our favorite meals feels overwhelming. That’s why so many people quit before they even begin.

I’d love to say I went from eating red meat to a fully whole-food, plant-based lifestyle overnight—but that wouldn’t be real life.

Woman in a colorful sweater holding a piece of fried cauliflower.

My journey started with familiar foods—meals that mirrored the taste and texture of what I was used to. Over time, I refined my choices, leaning more into whole, anti-inflammatory foods that truly nourish my body.

And that’s exactly why places like Gentle Grill matter.

A Restaurant That Meets You Where You Are

What I appreciate most about Gentle Grill is their balance.

They create healthier versions of classic comfort foods while still offering whole-food options for those of us committed to clean eating.

Because here’s the truth:

  • If you’re dealing with chronic illness or inflammation, you may need to go all in.
  • But if you’re generally healthy and just craving something indulgent every now and then… there’s space for that too.

And if that craving hits? Gentle Grill might just be your spot.

What I Tried (And Loved 😍)

🔥 Cauliflower Buffalo Bites

Lightly battered cauliflower tossed in buffalo sauce and served with ranch—seasoned to perfection. Crispy, flavorful, and satisfying.

🍟 Gentle Style Fries

These completely blew my mind. Honestly? Better than those famous animal-style fries everyone in California raves about.

Was it the house-made thousand island dressing? The melted cheddar? The caramelized onions?
Listen… baby!!! It was ALL of it.

🍗 Buffalo Chicken Fries

Crispy fries topped with cubed vegan fried chicken and smothered in buffalo sauce. This one is for the comfort food lovers.

🥪 Brisket Sandwich

Made with their house-made seitan, this sandwich is layered with barbecue sauce and a corn-cabbage coleslaw on ciabatta.

I don’t eat as much gluten these days—but I tried it just for you. And I was impressed.

What stood out most? They make their seitan in-house, avoiding the long list of additives you often find in store-bought versions.

A Pleasant Surprise: Gluten-Free Options

On a more recent visit, I went in with one goal—to see what I could enjoy while sticking to my whole-food, gluten-free focus.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they offer an entire dedicated gluten-free menu, with many items that can be easily modified.

And let me tell you… they did not disappoint.

What I Tried (Round Two 👀)

🥗 Health Nut Bowl

Mixed greens, craisins, candied walnuts, and feta cheese with raspberry vinaigrette.

Large salad in a metal tray topped with candied pecans, cranberries and feta served with a side of raspberry dressing.

I was truly impressed that the feta is house-made. If I didn’t already know this was a plant-based restaurant, I wouldn’t have guessed it was vegan.
Soo good!

🥬 Gentle Bowl

Spinach, broccoli, edamame, and cucumbers, finished with Italian dressing and topped with chimichurri.

Now, you might expect a bowl this green to be a little… one-note. But in my opinion? It was anything but boring.

The variety of textures kept things interesting, and the chimichurri brought that flavor bomb energy that made the whole dish come alive.

🍲 Cabo Bowl

Cilantro-lime quinoa, black beans, corn, tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, and chipotle cashew cheese dressing.

This bowl is typically made with crispy plant-based chicken, but it can be made gluten-free upon request. I had mine topped with jackfruit instead—and it did not disappoint.

🌮 Nachos

A bed of crispy corn tortilla chips topped with seasoned plant-based “beef,” black beans, melted cheddar, cilantro, and salsa.

I swapped the ground “beef” for their house-marinated pulled jackfruit to keep it gluten-free.

The jackfruit was good. Don’t get me wrong, but honestly? The star of the dish might have been those chips—perfectly crisp with just the right touch of salt.

More Than Food—It’s a Mission

At Gentle Grill, the mission goes beyond the plate.

They aim to nourish the body, mind, and planet by serving vibrant, plant-based meals inspired by the principles of the Blue Zones—regions known for longevity and wellness.

Every bite is rooted in kindness:

  • Kindness to your body
  • Kindness to animals
  • Kindness to the Earth

And that intention? You can feel it.

The Heart Behind the Brand

What truly sets Gentle Grill apart is the people behind it.

Owner Derek Rose and Head Chef Amarleon Burnet lead with heart, and it shows in every detail—from the menu to the mission. There’s a genuine desire to make healthier food accessible, without judgment.

It’s not about perfection.
It’s about progress.

And that’s a message I can stand behind.

Final Thoughts 🌿

Whether you’re:

  • Fully plant-based
  • Transitioning
  • Or just plant-curious

Gentle Grill offers a space where you can explore, enjoy, and evolve—one meal at a time.

Because this journey isn’t about restriction.
It’s about making room for the life—and the health—you desire.
