Many people still think of self-care as a luxury — something you do after you’ve taken care of everyone else. We often associate it with manicures, pedicures, or spa days. And while those things are lovely, true self-care runs much deeper.
It’s about doing whatever it takes to optimize your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being — every single day.
This year, I’m here to remind you that self-care isn’t optional. It’s survival. Here are five reasons why radical self-care is non-negotiable this year.
1. You’re Not Getting Any Younger
Let’s be real — none of us are.
If you’re anything like me, you want to look good as you age, but even more importantly, you want to feel good too. I used to love flipping through Essence magazine, admiring those age-defying beauties. But I realized that looking youthful isn’t enough — I want to wake up every morning with energy, strength, and joy.
We often accept age-related decline as “normal” — things like stiff joints, fatigue, slower metabolism, or brain fog. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Science continues to show that lifestyle choices — what you eat, how you move, how you rest, and how you manage stress — can literally slow down the hands of time.
You’ve worked hard all your life. You deserve to enjoy your retirement years — traveling, laughing, and living fully. That starts with taking care of your health now.
2. Radical Self-Care Could Save Your Life
Here’s the truth: your health problems aren’t going to fix themselves.
It’s easy to ignore symptoms, to push through pain, or to chalk things up to “just getting older.” But sometimes, that nagging headache, fatigue, or weight gain is your body’s way of waving a red flag.
I’ve seen too many friends die young from preventable diseases — things that could have been managed with early detection and proactive care. Please don’t wait until it’s too late.
Promise yourself that this year, you’ll schedule those checkups, listen to your body, and seek answers until you find them. Your future self will thank you.

3. Genetics Doesn’t Have to Be Your Destiny
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger.”
Just because certain diseases run in your family doesn’t mean you’re doomed to experience them too. The top causes of death in America — like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers — are largely influenced by diet and lifestyle.
When you practice radical self-care, you take your health into your own hands. You choose to move differently, eat differently, and live intentionally. You might have inherited the genes, but you can change the expression.

4. Stress Is a Silent Killer
Let’s face it — life is stressful. Between work, family, relationships, and everything happening in the world, we’re all carrying heavy emotional loads.
And while we can’t always control what’s happening around us, we can strengthen what’s happening within us. Radical self-care helps you build resilience — the ability to bounce back, stay centered, and protect your peace.
Whether it’s through prayer, meditation, movement, journaling, or therapy, you have to actively refill your cup. The more chaotic life gets, the more grounded you must become.
5. The World Needs You — Whole and Well
You have a purpose. And the people who love you — your family, your community, your circle — need you to be your best self.
When you start prioritizing your well-being, something shifts. Your mood lifts, your patience grows, and your light shines brighter. You become the kind of person who inspires others to take care of themselves too.
Taking care of you isn’t selfish. It’s a radical act of love — for yourself and for everyone connected to you.
Bonus: You Owe You
At the end of the day, no one is coming to save you. You owe it to yourself to live a life that feels good — not just one that looks good.
Only you know the dreams still tucked away in your heart. Only you can decide that this is the year you go all in on you.
We can’t control everything that happens, but we can control how we show up. And that starts with honoring your mind, body, and spirit.
This year is a gift — and there’s no time like the present to make radical self-care your new normal.
